Pointing is the mortar between bricks or stones. Repointing means raking out the old, failing mortar and replacing it with new, properly finished joints.

Pointing: Materials, Methods and Options
Pointing is simple in principle, but the details decide how long it lasts.
Depth matters
Old mortar needs raking out to a proper depth so the new mortar has something to grip. Shallow pointing falls out.
Chimneys and gable ends
The most exposed brickwork on a house is often the chimney and gable walls, which is why pointing work often goes hand in hand with roofing.
Finishing the joint
The joint is finished to shed water off the face of the wall rather than letting it sit.
Repointing around roofs
Where brickwork meets the roof (at chimneys, parapets, gable ends and abutment walls), failing pointing is a common source of water getting behind flashings and into the roof space. Because we're roofers, we look at the pointing and the roof together, so the whole junction is watertight rather than just one part of it.
Patch repairs vs full repointing
If only a small area has failed, a patch repair can be enough. But if mortar is soft across a whole elevation or chimney, patching one area just moves the problem along. We'll look at the full wall and tell you honestly what makes sense, with photos of what we've found.
What good pointing looks like
Well-finished pointing is even, solid and slightly shaped to shed rain off the face of the brick. It shouldn't be smeared over the brick edges or left rough and porous. The goal is joints that protect the wall and look right on the building.
